Winter is really here on Rokkosan. This year the weather on Rokkosan has been a bit colder than usual and we have more snow as well. The past few weeks the temperatures have been between -2c and -8c. There have been snowfalls of up to 10cm in places and with the cold weather, even when the sun is shining the snow remains. The mountain has become a winter wonderland.
The mountain covered in a nice blanket of white snow makes everything look very different, more peaceful and calm than usual. Trees and plants all over the mountain have a soft white sheen and the open fields of the Kobe Golf Club (which is closed during the winter) become large expanses of beautiful snow. Winds blowing through the trees and over open spaces create snow banks that are wonderful for children and adults to play in and dig out snow caves.
Snow removal trucks and plows are also hard at work on the mountain daily. Which is something that one usually can only see in areas much further north. Road workers work hard to keep the main streets passable. Off of the main roads though, the snow can be deep in places, especially on some of the hiking trails. So be sure to dress warm and wear proper foot wear for walking in the snow and over ice.
The Rokko Base Cafe is also a wonderful place to stop by for something warm to eat and drink and to relax and warm up in front of the roaring fire of the wood stove there. On days that the Mt. Rokko Guide House is open, one can stop by here to rest one’s feet and warm up.
