Maya Backpack Market
The backpack market is a relaxed flea market idea that was born on Rokkosan. It was started in February 2006 on Maya-san as a small event and has really grown over the years. Now numerous people will show up with backpacks as well as many with actual stalls too.
They are often held at various places on Rokkosan and the main one is held at Maya Kikusei-dai on the third Saturday of every month from March until November each year. This month it will be on Saturday June 18th from 11:00 until 16:00 (might be canceled if the weather is bad.)
The event is right at the Maya-san Kikuseidai area near the Maya Ropeway Star station on the May View Line. One can also hike up the mountain or take the Rokkosan Cable up and hike over to Maya-san. To get to the Maya Cable, take the Saka Bus from JR Nada Station or Hankyu Oji Koen Station. From Sannomiya, Rokkomichi or Hankyu Rokko Stations get the Kobe City Bus No. 18 and get off at Maya Cable-Shita. Please note there is no parking on Maya-san at the venue.
There is no stall fee and even registration is not necessary (if you want to sell food or beverages though, registration is required and there are various guidelines and restrictions).
If you have some things around the house that you think someone else might want, you can put them in a backpack and head up the mountain to join in the fun. One can sell or even trade with other people. Bring the whole family, have a nice picnic and enjoy meeting other people and basking in the outdoors. Hope to see you there!
Also right at the same place the Maya Backpack Market is held is a wonderful place called Monte702. They have a cafe with an amazing view out over the bay, an outside terrace where one can enjoy bbqing with friends, and a shop that rents and sells all kinds of outdoor goods.
Monte702 makes it easy to have fun in the mountains even if you do not have your own gear. Rent a tent, hammock, table, chair, bike, mat, stove, cooking gear, and more! You can literally show up with the clothes on your back and outfit yourself there for the day.
Their hours of operation are; 11:00-17:00 (open until 20:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, national holidays, and during the summer season from 7/20 to 8/31; until 19:00 on Fridays, Saturdays, and national holidays during the winter season from 11/1 to 3/19)
They are closed on Tuesdays (closed the following day if Tuesday is a national holiday; and are open all summer from 7/20 to 8/31).
So find some things you don’t need but think that other might want for the backpack flea market, get your friends or family together and head up Maya-san for a fun filled time!
See you on the Mountains!
