Vories Rokko Cottage and Japan Brickfest

Discover the Charm of Vories Rokko Cottage

Nestled in the picturesque mountains of Rokkosan, the Vories Rokko Cottage is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. This enchanting retreat was built in 1934 by William Merrell Vories, a remarkable architect who came to Japan in 1905. Initially arriving as an English teacher, Vories eventually oversaw the construction of over 1,600 houses, buildings, and churches across Japan, leaving a lasting architectural legacy.

The Vories Rokko Cottage served as a summer mountain retreat for the Vories family, showcasing a beautiful blend of Japanese and Western architectural styles. Recognized as a Registered National Cultural Asset and one of the 100 Selected Modern Houses in Hyogo, this cottage offers a unique glimpse into the past. Purchased and preserved by Amenity 2000 as a National Trust, the property is meticulously maintained, allowing visitors to truly experience the serene lifestyle the Vories family enjoyed.

In 2008, the Amenity 2000 Association acquired the property with the mission to foster a “peaceful culture” among citizens. By promoting National Trust ideals, they aim to preserve historical estates and encourage harmonious living with nature. Their efforts extend to reviving ecological lifestyles, which serve as a foundation for cultural enrichment.

Expanding its charm, the adjacent property was purchased in 2018, and by 2020, a stunning Mountain Forest Garden was created for visitors to stroll through and soak in the natural beauty of the area. Looking ahead, the spring of 2025 will see the opening of a new cottage on the property, complete with a café and a crafts area for guests to enjoy.

This year 2024, Vories Rokko Cottage welcomes visitors every Saturday, Sunday, and public holiday from April 6th to November 17th, from 11 am to 4 pm.
