Introducing Mountain Bike Forest Kobe on Rokkosan 🚵‍♂️🌲

Rokkosan has long been celebrated as a hiker’s paradise, a scenic retreat,  and Kobe’s scenic “back garden.” Now, two-wheeled adventure seekers have a dedicated playground of their own: Mountain Bike Forest Kobe (マウンテンバイクフォレスト神戸).

Carved into the natural mountain woodlands of Rokkosan, this dedicated park is designed to give riders of all backgrounds a thrilling, safe, and ecologically conscious way to experience downhill flow and off-road riding.

🌲 What Is Mountain Bike Forest Kobe?

Unlike multi-use hiking paths where sharing narrow corridors with pedestrians requires extreme caution, Mountain Bike Forest Kobe provides purpose-built, dedicated singletrack and flow lines.

Born out of the municipal Kobe Climbing/Mountain Project (神戸登山プロジェクト), the park embraces the global “trail town” model, where mountain biking and hiking culture thrive side-by-side without mutual interference. By routing riders onto sustainably engineered courses, the park minimizes ecological erosion while preserving pedestrian serenity on traditional walking paths.

🚵 The Trails: 4 Dedicated Courses

The trail network features four sculpted lines ranging from smooth family-style glides to technical, berm-loaded tracks:

  • ① Forester Line (Beginner): A gentle, easy-rhythm flow trail weaving through shaded woods. Its wide, sweeping corners make it an approachable confidence-builder for beginners and casual riders.

  • ② Maple Coaster (Intermediate): A bike-park style course packed with consecutive banked berms and rhythmic turns. It invites riders to drop low, lean hard, and master dynamic weight shifts at speed.

  • ③ Sakura Drop (Intermediate): A tighter singletrack tracing an elevated woodland ridge, culminating in a built wooden ladder drop for a clean dose of controlled adrenaline.

  • ④ Pinetastic (Intermediate): Built to mimic wild, backcountry singletrack. Natural contour lines and technical corners demand quick terrain-reading and dynamic body positioning.

🚲 Bike & Gear Rentals (Mobichari)

Don’t own an off-road rig or want to avoid hauling heavy equipment up the mountain? You can still ride!

  • Mobichari (モビチャリ) Rental Fleet: Rental bikes are available on-site through the park’s official Mobichari service, offering trail-ready mountain bikes matched to the forest terrain.
  • Protective Gear: Helmets are strictly mandatory across all lines. Safety equipment—including helmets and protective pads—is also available to rent or reserve through the service, ensuring visiting tourists and newcomers can ride fully protected without packing bulky gear.

💡 Rules, Registration & Fees

  • Free Course Access: Using the trail network itself is 100% free of charge.
  • Online Safety Pledge (English Available): Before rolling onto the dirt, every rider must complete a quick online usage pledge agreeing to trail safety rules. The pledge form is conveniently provided in both English and Japanese via smartphone.
  • Trail Etiquette: To protect the forest soil and prevent ruts, all trails close during rainy weather and when tracks remain saturated and muddy.

🚗 Access & Parking

  • Dedicated Parking: Located 400 meters north of Entrance A (capacity: 15 spaces; 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM; ¥1,000 per entry payable via PayPay).
  • Public Transit: Accessible via bus/train routes serving the Kobe Municipal Arboretum (森林植物園), located roughly a 30-minute walk from the trail hub.

Whether you’re renting your very first bike or testing your skills on technical drops, Mountain Bike Forest Kobe brings a dynamic new chapter to outdoor recreation on Rokkosan! So head up to the mountains and give trail mountain biking a try!!

See you on Rokkosan!
